These materials are then sent to a recycling facility. There is also a 24-hour recycling drop-off site at all facilities for plastic (#1 & #2 bottles ONLY), aluminum/steel cans and clear/brown/green glass.

Recycling (181,000 total tons recycled in 2001!)

All curbside programs accept aluminum/steel cans, clear/brown/green glass and newsprint. Many curbside programs accept more items; if you’re not sure what materials are in your program, or whether you have curbside pick-up, check with your municipal office or our website, www.lcswma.org for more details. The Authority also hosts three 24-hour drop-off sites throughout the county for plastic (#1 & #2 bottles ONLY), aluminum/steel cans and clear/brown/green glass; their locations are referenced above. There are 38 curbside programs that service 76% of Lancaster County. The recycling rate has grown every year since the Authoritys plan was implemented in 1989 to reach the current rate 33.8%.

What Does the Authority Do?
The Authority processes and disposes of waste primarily generated in Lancaster County; typically over 530,000 tons of waste a year. Most waste is hauled to the Resource Recovery Facility where it is incinerated and used to generate electricity. Ash from burning the waste goes to the Frey Farm Landfill along with other types of waste that will not burn.

What Doesnt the Authority Do?
The Authority does not pick up waste. It does not levy any taxes to fund its operations (revenue is generated from disposal fees, sale of electricity and other sources). FOR MORE INFORMATION, OR FOR DIRECTIONS TO OUR FACILITIES, PLEASE CONTACT OUR OFFICE AT (717) 397-9968 OR ON WWW.LCSWMA.ORG
