Department of Public Safety

     Bureau of Fire The Bureau of Fire consists of 87 firefighters working in three fire stations throughout the city. In addition, the Bureau offers fire safety education and consulting services, provides fire suppression and code enforcement, special rescue operations, and hazardous material abatement. The Bureau also offers extensive training for new members and ongoing in-service training for all members.

     Bureau of Police A compliment of 160 police officers and 60 civilian employees operates the Bureaus three divisions: Patrol, Criminal Investigation, and Administrative Services. The Patrol Division includes uniformed and neighborhood officers in cruisers, on bicycles and on horseback. The division also includes school crossing guards, parking enforcement personnel, and park security guards. The Criminal Investigation Division includes both an adult offender and a juvenile offender section. It also maintains a Pattern Crime Unit, a Drug Suppression Unit, and a Street Operations Unit. The Administrative Services Division consists of a records section, the community service aides program wherein civilians are hired for certain routine duties, and sections that deal with community relations, crime prevention, and training. The emergency telephone number 911 may be called from a pay phone without putting a coin in the slot.
