CITY OF LANCASTER

Department of Public Works

Bureau of Engineering The city engineers design and implement all public improvement projects, such as curbs, sidewalks, water mains, and sewer lines. All traffic matters, including signs and signals, are the responsibility of this bureau.

Bureau of Parks and Public Property This bureau maintains all public buildings, parks and playgrounds, Penn Square, Lancaster Square, and other public properties throughout the city. It also administers Central Market and the tree-planting program and is responsible for trash pickup at all public properties.

Bureau of Waste Water Operations This is the operating agent for the citys sewer system. Approximately 21 million gallons of sewage are treated daily at the South Sewage Treatment Plant. Portions of Lancaster County also use this service.

Bureau of Streets Reconstruction, maintenance, and snow clearance of nearly 100 miles of city streets and alleys are the principal job of the bureau. In addition, it does street and storm sewer cleaning, including leaf pickup in the autumn.

Bureau of Water This bureau operates the water system, using water from the Conestoga and Susquehanna rivers. Approximately 20 million gallons are processed daily through the two filter plants, and more than 115,000 residents in the city and county use that water. The Bureau of Water employs 85 people and performs some 30,000 tests annually to ensure water quality.
